Bing Versus Google

Bing of course is the much touted search engine by Microsoft. According to Microsoft it is meant to dethrone the king of search engines. Will it dethrone Google? Not likely. I have used Google for a very long time so I suppose my opinion is biased however I have been forcedto use Bing as well and can't see that it is better.

In my day to day use I utilize Google to search at home and at my workplace I use Google for the maps to locate customers. Awhile back our workplace (possible getting kickbacks from Microsoft?) decided to block out Google Maps and only allow us to use Bing. After a few months and complaints from the staff we were allowed to choose which we preferred to use. I promptly went back to Google.

It seems to me that over the past few years we have seen a lot of large internet companies intruding upon others territory. With Google creating Google checkout in an attempt to take Paypal's business, creating Android operating systems and getting into the mobile market in an attempt to take some of Microsoft and other companies business. In retaliation Ebay drew back on ads it was running through Google. The Bing thing just seems more of that, simply Microsoft attempting to retaliate and take some of Google's business.

Back in the 1990s I was very much pro-Microsoft, they were an example of a normal person, Bill Gates, that was able to rise up creating a multi-billion dollar empire. It was a triumph the entrepreneur and ushered in the era of E-commerce among other great things. But these days with Gates gone and Steve Ballmer, Microsoft much like Ballmer seem like nothing more than a spoiled child. Check the video below for a hilarious opinion on Bing and Ballmer from a previous employee. He was apparently fired by Steve Ballmer because he didn't say "Bing!" like it was fun. Trust me this video will make you laugh!

Keep in mind the video does have a few swears so if your easily offended you may not want to view. But I felt I needed to include it to illustrate a point. If you have seen how Ballmer acts at his presentations it isn't that big of a stretch of imagination to think he would simply fire someone for something trivial and that just isn't right.

Google to me is the new underdog turned multi-billion dollar success story and maybe we will see them eclipsed at some but I don't think that will be anytime soon.

Overall it isn't that Bing has a horrible interface. Miicrosoft did everything they coud to make it as visually appealing as possible and as much as that is judging a book by it's cover it is bound to draw some to use it. The search results are comparable to Google. When put head to head I do find however that Google search results are a bit more accurate in terms of looking for a little more obscure subjects. With their attempts to match Google with maps and other aspects of tools Google provides I find it a lot more lacking.

No doubt Bing will find business with users and is a good replacement to Microsoft's previous search engine. But if they want to take down Google they will have to be much better. From someone that uses Google for many different things I can say that is a very difficult task. But I suppose time will tell. Leave a comment and let me know which search engine you prefer and your thoughts on the subject.
