Silly Superhero Names Of the 1930s And 1940s

Having at one time in my past been a seller of golden age comics (1930s - 1940s) on Ebay I've seen a lot of rather silly comic superhero names. Granted they were in the very early stages of establishing comics featuring superheroes. If characters like Batman and Superman had not become so huge over time and faded who is to say we wouldn't find their names silly. So I haven't included some that are vaguely silly but the ones I feel really stick out as very silly. Some of these I personally read through the comics and I can honestly say they are really good for a laugh.

So this superhero is a man whose power allows him to shrink down to the size of a doll but retain the strength of a man at normal size. Other characters included Doll Girl and Elmo the Wonder Dog! Surprisingly enough this comic book ran for ten years from 1939 - 1949. Which if you are familiar with comics is the first superhero boom. Not surprising though was this characters disappearance before the 1950s when many big name characters such as Captain America, the Flash and a few others disappeared until the 1960s.

The Whizzer, hm, where to begin. Well the Whizzer is a superhero who like the Flash would whiz onto the scene and try to save the day. Dressed in his yellow suit with a large W on the front this guy sounds more like someone with a problem wetting his pants then a superhero. Appearing in 1941 in 1946 he joined a team called the "All-Winners Squad," which of course sounds like something Charlie Sheen should be leading. The Whizzer disappeared in the late 1940s.

Now before you get an image of Dorthy, Sophia, Blanche and Rose from Golden Girls keep in mind even Betty White would have been quite young during this characters run. Appearing in the 1940s. For a time she replaced Bucky as the sidekick of Captain America. She had no real powers just a mask and golden suit.

Commando Yank appeared in the 1940s much like Batman he had no powers and used guns, knives and other things. The picture to the right makes it look like he just yanked a muscle (no pun intended). With many of the other superheroes he disappeared as well by the end of the 1940s.

You can tell they were really brain storming back in the 1930s when they came up with this Superhero, the Clock, appeared in 1936. In the 1930s the superhero thing was just starting to catch on so I suppose I can cut this creator some slack. Well at least he'll always know what time it is.

So this has no relation to Iron Man from Marvel Comics, Bozo The Iron Man is actually a robot. Stolen from an evil scientist by the other main character, hugh Hazzard, renamed it Bozo and modified it to fight crime. This character first appeared 1939 and appeared periodically throughout the 1940s. I can guarantee you Robert Downey Jr. would have thought twice about taking on the role if they name were Bozo The Iron Man but then he did star in Tropical thunder.

As I look through the pictures I have of the golden age comics I once sold many others spring to mind such as: Plastic Man, Johnny Thunder, Uncle Sam, The Red Bee, Americommando, The Human Bomb, Miss America, Robotman, and Hourman (he should team up with The Clock, they could be the Time Piece Duo.
