The Justice System Is A Joke Part 1

The justice system in Canada is a joke.

Granted crime does not run rampant across the country here. But if it did they would have to declare marshall law and declare a state of emergency all year round. In Canada a convicted serial killer will only get 25 years in jail. If you convicted of drug trafficking you most likely get probation and no jail time. If you plead insanity most likely if it is a graphic crime you will get off after a few years in a mental hospital.

Consider the following case:

Vince Weiguang Li, in 2006 became a citizen of Canada having immigrated from China. Weiguang Li who in China was an engineer had to take menial jobs to support himself. After working at Wal-mart, Mcdonalds, a church and finally a paper delivery service he told his wife he was headed to Winnipeg to attend a job interview. Items he took with him included his laptop and a large serrated knife. When he boarded the greyhound bus initially he sat alone. At a stop some miles outside Winnipeg he sold his laptop to a kid walking down the street and then reboarded the bus. This time he sat beside a 22-year old passenger Tim Mcclean.

As they approached Winnipeg Weiguang Li withdrew his knife and began stabbing Tim Mcclean in the back of the neck. Other passengers quickly yelled to the bus driver and he stopped the bus as everyone cowardly ran off the bus. Weiguang Li proceeded to completely cut off Mcclean's head and began eating his flesh. He brought the head to the front of the bus and showed it to the other passengers through the window holding it by the hair. Then he returned to eating the kid's flesh cutting off his ears nose and part of his mouth and putting them in a bag in his pocket for later.

Once the perpetrator was arrested he went to trial in Canadian courts and was found not criminally responsible for his actions. He was placed in a mental hospital and receives yearly reviews to decide upon his release date. More recently his lawyers have argued to have Weiguang Li given the chance to have supervised walks about the community where the mental facility is located.

Now I can have sympathy for someone who immigrates to Canada looking for a better life and can't find a decent job. I can have sympathy for someone who due to a language barrier is unable to make friends and connections in a new country. I can even have sympathy for someone who begins to have marital problems with his wife. As they were seperated for a period and then got back together.

But all of the trials we face as human beings and here as Canadian citizens do not give anyone the right to kill a total stranger in cold blood. To mutilate and cannibalize another persons body is the most horrific of crimes and as such should be dealt the most heavy of legal judgements. Someone like this should be considered a security risk to all human life and be locked away for the remainder of their lifetime.

They should not be allowed to claim that they were not responsible for what they did. They should not be to walk, supervised or otherwise free about a community in which children play and normal innocent people go about their business.
