Foo Fighters Live

Showing up early I quickly found my seat in the Palace of Auburn Hills the anticipation for the Foo Fighters to take the stage could be felt and heard throughout the audience. Before that two bands would be performing: Mariachi El Bronx & Rise Against. Both bands did well. I much preferred Rise Against whose loud guitars and incredible riffs prepped me for the oncoming rock onslaught.

In perfect showmanship Dave Grohl and company appeared with a ferocious shower of lights and thundering guitar and the ascension of several large custom made oddly shaped computer tube

looking devices. The devices had the ability to project images across each surface, I have never see anything like it. Throughout the concert all manner of artistic images and special effects would erupt across the surfaces. Aside from these devices the entire floor of the stage was a massive LCD also flooding with images and an incredible array of psycadelic colors. There was also two large jumbo screens trained on the band to allow those with poorer seats to see the action. This combined with the impressive light show was enough to justify having purchased tickets.

Foo Fighters started the concert of with 'Bridge Burning,' the opener for their most recent album, Wasting Light. Despite his age Dave Grohl now 42 was able to run from one end of the stage to the other screaming yelling and shaking his head all around throughout the concert. When he came onstage he proclaimed, "Were going to play for the next 3 hours!" and then asked the

audience for their permission. Not too surprising what the answer was.

Throughout the 3 hour concert Grohl went from running around the stage to chatting with the audience. He made jokes and generally fed from the energy from the crowd. More than once Grohl ran down a runway that went from the stage down the middle of the floor to the rear of the floor where a small stage was set up. This allowed those farthest from the band to get a closeup view they wouldn't have otherwise gotten.

The long set list consisted of newer and older songs alike. The played most of the

newest album and at least a few songs from each record.

When the band initially left the stage and it appeared that the show was complete they appeared on the overhead screens and waved hello they began holding up fingers to see how many songs the audience wanted the hear. At this point it appeared Grohl was having a bit of fun with the audience. After a minute the other band members joined in holding up different amounts of fingers, hearing the crowd cheer if they held up more fingers and boo when they took it down a song. Eventually Dave made his way back to the stage as Taylor held up

seven fingers without Grohl's knowledge, which was rather humorous.

What one would assume would be a one or two song encore ended up being a seven song encore. Grohl spent almost three songs on the small stage at the back of the mosh pit doing acoustic numbers during the fourth song the band joined in half way through after which they completed three more songs that ended with 'Everlong.'

Foo Fighters and in particular Dave Grohl are master showman in my opinion. They went all out to give the crowd everything they had. They did everything to make a connection and work the crowd with a passion and I think everyone who experienced it left with a little bit of Foo Fighters in their hearts.
